An army of volunteers of all ages will be on the streets and open spaces across the borough this weekend and into next week for a concerted clean-up campaign.

More than 20 community litter picks will be taking place as part of the "Love Where You Live" campaign.

The Love Where You Live drive encourages people to team up and clean-up their communities.

Wirral Council is backing the activities by co-ordinating planned litter picks, providing litter-picking kits and arranging for waste contractors Biffa to take away bags of rubbish.

The week is following on from regular litter picks organised by environmental groups such as the New Brighteners and the High Tidiers.

Several schools and householder groups are also organising events in their area.

Cllr Phillip Brightmore, cabinet member for environment, said: “It is excellent to see so many individuals and groups committed to making their community as clean as it can be, their efforts are an invaluable contribution to our pledge to create a cleaner local environment and I’d like to thank everyone who has already signed up to support the week of action.”

The week will culminate with a celebration for everyone who takes part at Birkenhead Town Hall next Friday, October 20, between 1pm and 3pm.
