A SECOND World War veteran from Wirral has celebrated his 100th birthday with a special telegram from Queen Elizabeth.

A resident at Brookfield Nursing Home in West Kirby, Charles Cresswell celebrated his 100th birthday on September 17 with the help of Mayor of Wirral Councillor Ann McLachlan.

In the army for the duration of the Second World War, Charles was at Dunkirk in 1940 and had stints serving in Egypt, Italy and France.

After the war ended he joined the colonial service in Sierra Leone where he worked as an accountant.

On his return to England he worked for the Treasury.

Charles was recently honoured by the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur medal from the French Government in recognition of his distinguished war service in France during the Second World War.

During his special birthday party at the nursing home the Mayor presented him with a telegram from the Queen.

Charles' family including his grandchildren and great grandchildren were also in attendance to celebrate the grand occassion.
