FIVE men have been arrested on suspicion of assault after a man was found with serious head injuries in Birkenhead town centre.
Police and paramedics were called to a report that a man had fallen down some steps near the B&M store in Claughton Road on Wednesday at around 2.45pm.
The 47-year-old was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital by ambulance where his condition deteriorated.
He has since been transported to Walton Neurological Centre in Liverpool having suffered several bleeds on the brain.
His condition is described as critical.
Detectives believe the man had been with a group of other people at the time he suffered the head injury and following enquiries, five local men have been arrested on suspicion of assault.
They are currently in custody awaiting questioning.
