HISTORIC footage has been released showing Lord Leverhulme's funeral in 1925 by British Pathe.

More than 30,000 mourners attended the funeral, lining up outside Christ Church in Port Sunlight.

A well loved and respected community leader, William Lever bought 56 acres of land between the River Mersey and Bebington railway line in 1887.

Named Port Sunlight Lord Leverhulme built a model village surrounding the factory to house his employees.

In 1888 the village offered decent living conditions in the belief that good housing would ensure a healthy and happy workforce.

Lord Lever died of pneumonia at the age of 74 at his home in Hampstead on May 7, 1925.

The footage follows Lord Leverhulme's hearse and mourning cars driving through the crowds before the the coffin is carried towards the church.

The crowds then walk towards the Lady Lever Art Gallery - a museum founded and built by Lord Lever himself and dedicated in memory of his wife Elizabeth to pay their final respects.
