Owners of two Yorkshire Terriers were left shocked after their pets were attacked by a dog at a Wirral beauty spot.

Tony and Karen Williams from Eastham were out for a walk with their pets Maisy and her pup Maddy when a Staffordshire Bull Terrier-cross charged towards them.

It bit the animals leaving one of them with a deep wound before the owner dragged it off.

He has given a statement to the police who have also spoken to witnesses to the incident which happened at around 5pm, on Sunday, in Eastham Country Park.

Tony told the Globe: “The dog came out of nowhere and went for Maddy.

“My wife jumped down to try to shield her and I managed to drag the dog off by the collar.

“The owner then came across but that was when the dog went back for Maisy.”

Six-year-old Maisy was then bitten by the bull terrier.

“The dog took a large chunk out of her neck and severed an artery or vein – there was blood everywhere.

“So many people came running over to us to help and gave us something to wrap around her neck to stop the bleeding.

“A woman called Rachel came and threw us in her car and took us to Chester Gate the 24 hour vets.

“There was one point we thought we had lost her, she went limp in my arms but she managed to pull through.

“We didn’t know what the next 24 hours held for her as she was in a critical condition and she had lost a lot of blood as you can see in the pictures.

“We were told she may need a blood transfusion and they were not sure at that stage if they could operate on her.”

Tony received a call this morning that Maisy had stabilised and will be transferred to their local vets.

Wirral Globe:

Maisy has stabilised but is still in need of an operation

Tony continued: “She will undergo an operation. We’re hopeful now that she has stabilised. She’s a fighter.

“The dogs did not provoke the other dog and several witnesses have come forward to say the same.

“A witness had phoned the police and they took a statement from me about the incident."

The owner of the Staffs has since telephoned the Globe to say: "This was a complete accident.

"We had been out to the park as a family and as we were leaving I was getting my dogs into the car when one of them slipped his collar

"He saw the terriers and ran towards them. There was a lot of barking and he became over-excited and unfortunately before I could stop him he had bitten one of them.

"I managed to pull him off and got him back into the car.

"I stayed to talk to the police and explained what had gone on and I'm being interviewed by them tomorrow.

"I have been portrayed on social media as a thug and a monster. But I am not like that at all.

"This has been very distressing for everyone concerned and I really wish none of it had ever happened."

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm officers received a report on Sunday from a member of the public that her dog had been attacked by another dog in Eastham Ferry.

"The owner of the other dog was spoken to by officers at the scene and inquiries are being carried out to establish whether any offences have taken place."
