THE Prime Minister has vowed to help rebuild New Ferry following the devastating explosion which injured 34 people.

Wirral South MP Alison McGovern addressed Theresa May about the effects of the blast on the community during yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Questions.

Ms McGovern told the House of Commons: “Late on Saturday night a massive explosion devastated New Ferry in my constituency.

"We are thinking about all those who were hurt but, Mr Speaker, it is a miracle more people were not injured.

“The community now faces significant dereliction so will the Prime Minister join me in thanking all those who looked after my community this weekend and in recent days and will she arrange for me a meeting with the secretary of state to discuss how the Government can rebuild New Ferry.”

Mrs May replied: “I am very happy to do both of those things.

"First I would like to commend and thank all of those who worked so hard including emergency services and others to support their local community when this devastating explosion took place.

“And of course that work will continue, it doesn’t just happen at the weekend and there will be support given I’m sure to the community in the future.

“And I am very happy to ask the secretary of state for communities to meet with her and discuss how that community will be rebuilt and how it can overcome the impact of this explosion.”

Two people were seriously hurt during Saturday’s blast including a 60-year-old woman who was taken to Aintree hospital is said to be in a stable condition.

A 21-year-old man remains in a critical condition at Walton hospital.

The most badly affected properties – the terraced block between Griffiths the Butcher and the alleyway gap next to the Print Here shop - will remain closed to access and will take longer for safety work to be carried out or a decision on their future to be decided.
