WIRRAL based tea giant Typhoo is up for a prestigious award at the European Business Awards.

Shortlisted in the “National Champion” category Typhoo has been chosen following the first phase of judging by an independent panel.

The Wirral based company produces 125 million teabags each week making them the second largest tea producer in the UK.

Judged on their innovation, ethics and success, the business will now go through to the second stage - a public vote.

Other well-known businesses up for an award include Utility Warehouse, Peel Ports Group and Redrow PLC.

Beginning in 1903 Typhoo now employs 293 people in the borough and believe that their success in built on ‘innovation’.

Chief executive, Somnath Saha said: “We’re very proud to be selected to represent the UK as a National Champion.

“The European Business Awards is widely recognised as the showcase for Europe’s most dynamic companies and we are proud to be recognised at this level.”

Last year the tea brand announced that celebrity chef Nigella Lawson would become the face of the ‘Typhoo Moments’ campaign with Nigella endorsed packs rolling out across the core range.

They also announced a number of tea infused bakes such as a coconut cinnamon tea loaf, honeyed tea cupcakes and peach, tea and white chocolate traybake.
