A staff member was taken to hospital after being attacked during an attempted robbery at a newsagent’s in Moreton.
Police were called to Laska M News and Wine on Hoylake Road at around 6.20pm, on Sunday, after the would-be robber entered the store and demanded cash.
The shopworker suffered a facial injury as he tried to stop the raider, who fled empty-handed.
Detectives have issued CCTV stills of a man they believe could help the investigation.
House-to-house inquiries are underway along with forensic examinations.
Detective inspector Mike Dalton said: "I would appeal to the man in these images or anyone who recognises him to contact us.
"This type of behaviour is clearly unacceptable and I would urge the local community to come forward to help us to catch the person responsible."
Anyone with information should contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 2263 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111
