A FOUR-YEAR-OLD corgi needs surgery to correct a serious heart condition - but it's going to cost £5,000.

Cosmo, a Prembroke Welsh corgi, from Prenton, was diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) following routine neutering surgery.

His owner Simon Waltho is hoping to raise the money to cover the cost of veterinary bills and treatment because his insurance won't cover the cost of an operation.

The surgery would involve closing a small blood vessel which connects the aorta and pulmonary artery - the extra blood that comes back to the heart as a result of this being open causes the left side to enlarge, eventually causing heart failure.

Cosmo has not started any treatment for his condition however vets have warned the sooner the surgery begins, the better.

Simon said: "I've had him since he was eight weeks old and he's my best friend and the whole family loves him, he's a part of the family really.

"His insurance won't cover an expensive operation to close a PDA in his heart, the surgery is non-invasive but expensive £3,000 to £4,000 and £500 heart scans.

"The vet was surprised that he is in such good health considering his condition and age, apparently dogs with PDA do not normally live past one to two years, so with surgery he should lead a normal healthy life afterwards.

"We are struggling financially right now but this is something that has to be done, so any help would be tremendously appreciated, I'm making this as a last-ditch effort to get some support for his operation."
