BEREAVED relatives were left horrified after fly-tippers dumped piles of rubbish – including a kitchen sink – near their loved ones' graves.

Globe readers Joan and Ron Broadbent, both in their 60s and from Heswall, often visit Town Lane Cemetery in Bebington on Sunday afternoon.

But this week they was distressed to find walkways strewn with trash and household waste.

Also among the rubbish was an oven hob, drawers full of kitchen tiles, floor boards plastic bags and even a kitchen sink.

Mrs Broadbent - whose son, father and grandparents are buried at the cemetery – said: "When you go to a cemetery all you want to do is lay flowers on your loved ones' graves. You don't expect to see a kitchen sink dumped nearby.

"I can't understand the mentality of some people. What's wrong them, why do they feel the need to leave all this mess in a cemetery?"

Mrs Broadbent, a retired secretary who recently returned to Wirral after living away for many years, added: "It was awful to see this site when we visited on Sunday.

"We were horrified. It was heart-breaking.

"My grandfather has been buried here since 1941 and I have visited his grave many times.

"My husband I have also got our burial plots reserved here. It would be nice to think that we were in a place that was respected.

"I understand this is a problem affecting graveyards across Wirral.

"If that's the case why on earth aren’t the council doing more to stop it."

Cllr Bernie Mooney, cabinet member for environment, told the Globe: “This was an appalling act of environmental vandalism and an affront to grieving relatives visiting the cemetery.

"The rubbish has now been cleared and we have staff looking at all the available evidence to see if there is anything that might help identify who was responsible.

"If anyone has any information they think could help us to that end, please get in touch with us – the rubbish is clearly the remains of a kitchen that someone has very recently replaced, so look at the photos and see if it looks familiar."
