Footballing legend John Barnes has pledged his support for new Wirral youth zone The Hive by returning to the recording studio.

Following on from the success of his rendition of New Order’s ‘World in Motion’ hit for Italia 90, John has written a rap with the help of young Wirral people who will be attending The Hive when it opens next year.

The ex-Liverpool player and Tranmere manager said: “I was fortunate enough to be fully focused on football when I was growing up and avoided many of the negative influences, challenges and pressures that affect young people today.

“I’m supporting The Hive Youth Zone as it will give young people a safe place to go where they can socialise and spend their time on productive, creative and healthy activities.

“Taking part in the rap has brought back some great memories and will hopefully raise awareness of this important project.

“I’ve lived in Wirral for more than 30 years and it’s important to me that I give something back to the Merseyside area as the people here have supported me throughout my career.”

Chief executive at OnSide Youth Zones Kathryn Morley said: “We’re creating a network of Youth Zones across the country and the fantastic support of influential people like John is crucial.

“For young people to see that John is backing this inspirational project and supporting their future health and success is inspiring.

"John’s endorsement for The Hive is fantastic and it’s great to see him back in the studio.”

The Hive will provide more than 3,000 young people with a wide range of sporting and creative activities including music production.

The facility is being built in Exmouth Street in Birkenhead and is scheduled to open in February next year.

Young people from eight to 19 and 25 for those with a disability will be able to access career training and mentoring services seven days a week from the centre.
