HUNDREDS of homes in Bebington are currently without water and schools have been forced to close after a water mains burst this morning.

United Utilities engineers are currently trying to repair the pipe and say disruption is likely until lunchtime.

The leak has left more than 200 households in Bebington without water.

Wirral Council tweeted that Stanton Road, Poulton Lancelyn Primary, Brackenwood Infants and both Wirral Grammar Schools are closed. Brackenwood Juniors is open at present.

Lane three of the M53 is closed in both directions due to surface water from the incident.

A United Utilities spokesman said: "So far we have had just over 200 calls into our call centre for no water or poor pressure.

“We believe this issue is fairly localised but we don’t have the exact numbers of homes affected.

“We’re in the process of moving water around our network to bypass the damaged pipe to help restore water.

“We are sending a number of our water-on-wheels tankers, which we can use to pump water directly into the network to help keep taps flowing.

“We are really sorry for the inconvenience caused to our customers affected by this burst.”

Earlier this morning a woman meeded medical attention after her car overturned near Junction 4 at Bebington.

She was taken by ambulance to Arrowe Park Hospital and is understood to have suffered minor injuries.
