MERSEYSIDE'S police commissioner marked National Neighbourhood Watch week by re-launching the crime prevention movement in Wirral.

Jane Kennedy helped promote the scheme and thank its army of volunteers for their contribution during a special event at Woodchurch High School.

Ms Kennedy said: "Neighbourhood Watch is a great example of local people giving up their free time to work with the police to build safer communities together.

The UK’s largest voluntary organisation, it has around six million members .

"It not only helps to empower our residents, but also brings a sense of unity that together we can cut crime and protect each other.

"Nearly 2,000 schemes already exist on Merseyside and they are a fantastic demonstration of the power local people have to prevent crime and create better places.

"This week is an opportunity to thank everyone who invests their time and energy in the scheme and I hope today’s event will encourage even more people to sign up and get involved."

Also attending the event was Merseyside's Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Jeff Judge who said: "I am delighted that the PCC has agreed to join us to celebrate Neighbourhood Watch week in Wirral.

"It demonstrates the important role Neighbourhood Watch plays within our communities and also the continued support we have received from her office.

"This is a great opportunity for us to hear directly from Jane and it will also allow residents to provide their much valued feedback on local issues."

Merseyside Police supports all of the region’s Neighbourhood Watch schemes, actively engaging with scheme leaders and committees.

Wirral Superintendent Tracy Hayes said: “We are delighted to be supporting Neighbourhood Watch Week and hope that this event encourages even more local people to get involved.

"Merseyside Police has a nominated point of contact within each neighbourhood, making sure you are fully supported every step of the way.

"We already have numerous successful Neighbourhood Watch schemes across Wirral and Merseyside, which make a big difference to the way we police local areas.

"The time and effort that local residents give to working with the police helps create a real sense of spirit and build stronger communities, so I would encourage anyone who is able to spare some time to get in touch.

“From crime prevention advice, sharing of information and reporting of incidents and concerns, you will be an important part of the team.”
