A WIRRAL primary school is celebrating after winning a top Merseyside school sport award.

Bidston Avenue Primary School won ‘Primary School of the Year’ at the Merseyside Sporting Champions Awards, beating off competition from ten other primary schools across the region.

The annual award recognised the development of both pupils and staff and for demonstrating a contribution to the wider community Stuart Brady, Headteacher said: “We are truly honoured and extremely shocked. It has been an incredible journey for us over the last few years.

“Seeing our pupils having fun and reaching their sporting goals is priceless and we will continue to provide multiple opportunities for our pupils to learn and shine in PE and sport.”

Bidston Avenue Primary School is in partnership with many outside sports associations and has a particularly strong link with Birkenhead Park Rugby Club.

Stuart Brady continued: “We have a dynamic PE team, including two sports apprentices, who have worked tirelessly to meet the sporting needs of our wonderful pupils and their families.

“This award is a great recognition of everyone’s hard work and we continue to achieve together.”

Bebington High Sports College are close partners with Bidston Avenue and they provide weekly teacher training opportunities, helping to improve staff professional development in PE and sport teaching.

Mandy Ryan, PE and Sport Leader, said: “It’s the children’s enthusiasm and dedication which makes this award so special.

“Their participation in PE lessons, after school sport clubs, and competitions is truly amazing. They all deserve a gold medal.”

The latest award adds to an ever-growing list of achievements, including this year’s Sainsbury’s School Games Gold Kite-Mark.
