WIRRAL Council is on the hunt for new lollipop men and women.

With the new school term looming on the horizon, the authority is asking community-minded residents to "put themselves in the frame" and help make the journey to and from school safer for pupils.

There are currently a number of vacancies for School Crossing Patrols – more popularly known as the Lollipop Lady or Man – at locations right across the borough, which the council are looking to fill as soon as possible.

Cllr Stuart Whittingham, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “Our school crossing patrols are so important. Of course they are there to make sure young people get to and from school safely by helping them across busy roads, but there’s much more to it than that. They’re a familiar, friendly face to pupils and their parents or carers and they are an identifiable and reliable community figure.

“We know that there are all kinds of people in our communities for whom being a school crossing patrol would be a perfect fit, whether for their lifestyle, or their desire to perform a valuable public service. It is these people that we are trying to find in this recruitment drive.”

It is an excellent opportunity to for anyone who is looking for a bit of additional income while doing something worthy for the benefit of the local community.

Wirral’s School Crossing Patrols receive a good rate of pay as well as full training and support.

In order to try to promote the opportunity and the fact that there are vacancies waiting to be filled for the start of the September term, four cardboard cut-outs have been made are being moved around public buildings in the borough over the next few weeks where people can put themselves in the frame and see if their face fits.
