STAFF from Asda in Birkenhead celebrated the company's 50th anniversary with a donation of more than £8,000 and a cake to a local charity.

Customers and colleagues at the store were asked to nominate local community projects and Home Start Wirral received the most votes, receiving a surprise cake and a £8,695 donation from the Asda Foundation.

Home Start Wirral is a charity helping parents in the area build better lives for their children.

Kelly Jackson, store manager at Asda Birkenhead, said: "We wanted to give back to a deserving cause in Birkenhead as a huge thank you for the work they do in the community – and Home Start Wirral really fits the bill.

"Everybody loves a party and a slice of cake, and as it's our 50th birthday we wanted to celebrate with everyone who has helped make Asda what it is over the past 50 years."

Set up in 1988, the Asda Foundation aims to have a positive impact on local communities, by providing support to a range of local good causes, chosen by Asda community life colleagues across the UK.
