THE GLOBE will be running a live blog on our website tomorrow as we join forces with BBC Radio Merseyside for a debate with Wirral West general election candidates.

As one of the most hotly-contested ballots in living memory approaches, Radio Merseyside has invited all the candidates in the so-called "kingmaker" constituency to take part - just seven days ahead of the poll.

The discussion will take place as part of the Roger Phillips Show from noon and will also be covered online live by the Wirral Globe.

According to independent think tank "British Future" Wirral West will be one of ten "Kingmaker" seats that will help decide the outcome of the election.

Employment minister Esther McVey is battling to reverse a five-point poll lead for her Labour opponent Margaret Greenwood, a former teacher.

Labour has been pulling out the stops to try to esnure victory with party leader Ed Miliband, former deputy prime minister John Prescott and shadow healh secretary Andy Burnham all setting out their stalls in the constituency in recent weeks.

There is little love lost between the parties.

Lord Prescott recently joined campaigners on West Kirby beach where he called on Ms McVey – who he described as a “very tough girl” - to “come clean” on Tory plans for underground coal gasification in the Dee Estuary.

He told members of Save Hilbre Island and the Dee Estuary group that the Tories “can’t be trusted” and said only a Labour government could save the Dee from drilling.

He said: “Esther McVey isn’t fooling anyone with the leaflets she has been putting out in Wirral West.

“The underground coal gasification licence was granted by the Conservative government in 2013 and it was granted to Cluff, a Tory donor and former Tory candidate.”

But Ms McVey, who won in 2010 with a majority of just 2,436, hit back: “Two Jags has some cheek coming to Wirral, dipping his toes in the Dee and telling me to ‘come clean’ over UCG.”

"This is classic Labour smear tactics which, as usual, are designed to hoodwink the voters.

"They are so ashamed of their own record that they have resorted to misleading people about mine."
