A UKIP parliamentary candidate for Wirral has been accused of making racist and homophobic comments on his Facebook page.

Geoffrey Robert Caton is standing for UKIP in Wallasey at May’s general election, as well as Upton in the local elections.

According to the campaign group Hope not Hate, he made a series of posts between July and August 2013.

Mr Caton claimed homosexuality was not something to be proud of, referred to same sex marriage as a sin and described spending a day working in a Pakistani club as his "worst nightmare".

UKIP’s Wirral chairman Phil Griffiths told the Globe the posts were made “a month or two” before Mr Caton joined the party.

All of Caton’s Facebook posts – which were visible this morning – appear to have now been deleted, as does his Facebook profile.

A spokesman for UKIP said: "The comments were made very early into his UKIP membership and as a result of being in the party he now holds more inclusive views.

"Sadly he failed to put the comments about the nightclub into context, having agreed a price and there was then a huge amount of haggling once the job was finished. Out of context, it is easy to see how the comments could be misunderstood.

"It is up to the voters of Wallasey to decide his fate at this stage."
