SPRING has definitely sprung at one Wirral high school after the very special and tiny delivery of an adorable little lamb.

There had been an air of expectation as staff and students at Bebington High Sports College awaited the birth of this year’s ball of wool, with ‘Connie’ the first to arrive on a cold and wet March morning.

Pupils at the Bebington school – which operates its very own working farm complete with sheep, pigs, goats, chickens and ducks – were delighted to see the school’s cutest new member baah none when they arrived for class today, Monday.

Mum Zara went into labour at 4am and by 7.30am, the woolly ewe was taking her first gulp of colostrum – the important first milk produced by the sheep.

Connie and mum Zara are Zwartble sheep, from Holland.

Wirral Globe:

The bundle of joy is expected to be joined by a few morew lambs in the coming weeks as Zoe and Zelda - the school's other two Zwartble ewes - are expected to lamb soon.

Pete Fearon, co-ordinator for land-based science at the school said: “We have about 40 students taking the course and then with all the volunteers, that goes up to about 75.

“I was here during the night for the last 10 days so I’m glad lambing has finally started - next year will be the first time lambs born on the farm will have lambs here.”

Bebington High became the country's 100th school to have a farm and produces organic meat and vegetables for school meals and cookery classes.
