LES Potts has no plans to give up his job delivering the Wirral Globe - despite turning 90 years old today.

Every week for the last 18 years the Heswall-based great-great grandfather has been through, wind, rain, hail and snow to ensure his alloted 220 copies of the paper are delivered on his round in Brimstage Road, Acre Lane and Pulman Close.

The former regional sales manager for Cadbury's took over the round from his grandson Richard and has no intention of hanging up his bag just yet.

His time delivering the paper has created a media storm, with our story attracting interest from Radio Merseyside, BBC Northwest Tonight and ITV.

The Globe surprised him at his daughter's home in Heswall with a celebratory birthday cake and card this afternoon.

Les will celebrate the milestone with a family party at the Jug & Bottle pub in Heswall this Saturday.

His family have also paid to send him off for a well-earned break in the sun, with a holiday in Benidorm in June.

On our unexpected visit, he said: "It's a very, very nice surprise and considerate thing to do. I want to say thank you.

"My paper round has caused a quite a stir, with interest from everyone. I've also had a lot of kind words from people on the round.

"I love the job and couldn't imagine not getting out every week to do it. I'll carry on delivering the paper until my body tells me enough's enough.

"I've made a lot of friends on the round and enjoy getting outdoors, come wind, rain, hail and snow.

"It's a long round, about three-and-a-half hours, but can't think of a better way to spend my time."

He has four great grandchildren, and great-great grandson Kian-Jay Thomas Potts was born in October.

Daughter Sue Unsted said: "It's certainly been an interesting time, with dad's story attracting more interest than we could ever have imagined.

"Mum and dad used to do the round together, until mum couldn't do it any more. Sadly, mum died five years ago and I'm glad that dad has continued with the delivery.

"I'm happy for dad to carry on until such times as he knows he can no longer do it."

Happy birthday Les from all at the Wirral Globe.
