CELEBRATIONS marking Port Sunlight's 125th anniversary end with a lecture on the village’s clubs and societies later this month.

Taking place on Thursday, October 23, at the Old School Room in Bridge Street, it will explore the development of clubs and societies in the 20th century, looking at why some thrived while others disappeared altogether.

It will be hosted by Port Sunlight Museum’s collections and exhibitions officer Stuart Irwin and James Hayes, a Port Sunlight Museum volunteer who has conducted an enormous amount of research into the subject.

James said: "I have been researching the history of Port Sunlight's clubs and societies for some time now.

"It's a subject that holds a lot of interest for me as it provides a fascinating insight into life in the factory and village in good times and in bad."

Sport and leisure activities have always been a big part of the community here and there are no less than 25 active groups in the village today representing everything from bowling and knitting, to art and photography.”

Tickets are from Port Sunlight Museum on 0151 644 6466. Booking is essential due to limited places.

Katherine Lynch, Heritage manager for Port Sunlight Museum & Garden Village said: "It's been an action-packed year and we’ve really enjoyed working with the residents to celebrate the village’s unique heritage.

"It's been such a rewarding experience for us all. We are very keen to continue this partnership and are currently finalising our public programme for 2015 which will be announced shortly.”
