A FOOTBALL tournament takes place later this month in memory of a Wirral man killed in a road accident.

The Leigh Houghton Memorial Cup takes place at Park High Lower School in Claughton on Monday, October 20.

Six teams are taking part in what his sister Louise has described as a tribute to the keen amateur footballer, who died on Borough Road in Birkenhead last year after he was hit by by a car.

Proceeds will go to a charity that is being chosen by Leigh's family.

The 25-year-old played for Houlihan's in Claughton village. The club’s manager, Jeff Squires, and friend Lewis McNally have organised next weekend’s tournament.

Louise told the Globe: “It was a huge shock a such a loss to our family and we are still getting over losing him.

“We have had so much help and support by so many people but in particular his football manager.

Louise continued: "Everyone knew Leigh for his football and how much he loved it.

"His manager Jeff organised a charity football match and a charity day for Leigh in January, which raised £3,000 for help towards his funeral, which was attended by more than 1200 people.

“The funeral directors said it was one of the biggest if not the biggest funeral they had seen.”

Leigh worked as a costs administrator for Birkenhead-based Camps Solicitors, who are paying for the tournament.

Louise ended: “I want to say thank you for the help and support we have had so far.

“It’s incredible to think how a community has come together for Leigh in such sad circumstances and how, with the help of Jeff and Lewis, he will never be forgotten.”
