A MEETING to recruit volunteers to help run a recently-opened Wirral beauty spot takes place this week.

Wirral South MP Alison McGovern is inviting anybody with an interest in Port Sunlight River Park to come along to a meeting she is chairing to discuss a strategy going forward.

It will be held at Lady Lever Art Gallery cafe on Friday, October 10, at 6.30pm.

The beauty spot is situated on a former Wirral landfill site that was transformed after a multi-million pound regeneration project. Its opening ceremony took place in August, watched by more than 100 people, which included invited guests and walkers.

Alison said: "There has been a lovely community response to the park so far and I want to involve anybody with an interest in its development to come together in one room to devise a strategy.

"The park will rely on community volunteers and I know that people are very positive in general about this new addition to our community given the number of people that turned out to attend the open day.

"It is never too late to become involved but if you are interested in volunteering in any capacity coming along to this meeting would be beneficial.

"It will be an opportunity to ask questions and find out how together we can help sustain it for future generations and you will have the chance to officially sign up to join our Friends Group."

If you are interested in attending the event, contact Alison's office on 0151 645 6590 or email helen.dodd@parliament.uk

The site was used for landfill from 1991 to 2006 and is owned by waste management firm, Biffa. It was re-developed, at a cost of £2.3m, by the Land Trust.

It now features wildflower meadows, grasslands and picturesque views of Liverpool’s skyline. The 28-hectare park is set to become a haven for families and dog walkers.

The park is managed by service users of Wirral Autistic Society as part of a scheme to develop life skills.
