MARTIN Davies will talk about his family's First World War experiences on the opening day of Wirral Bookfest 2014 this weekend.

His talk The Year After at Irby Library takes place on Saturday, October 4, at 2.30pm.

It will discuss the impact of the First World War on soldiers who survived, and the families that awaited upon their return.

Martin will discuss his own family’s experiences, as well as the original sources he used to research for his book.

Taking venues across the borough, Bookfest is a showcase for writers, poets and historians.

History is high on this year’s list of activities, with the First World War and the Vikings both set to be illuminated by local historians.

Wallasey Central Library welcomes Viking expert Professor Stephen Harding on Friday, October 10, to tell all about Viking Wirral and the Saga of the Draken Harald Hårfagre Longship.

The event begins at 2.30pm. Tickets cost £5 and include refreshments. To book a place call 0151 639 2334.

Birkenhead Library will mark World Mental Health Day from 11am-3pm on October 10 with representatives of One to One Midwives, the Alzheimers Society, Magenta Living, the Terrence Higgins Trust and other local groups.

The event is free to attend and all are welcome.
