PRINCE Edward expressed his delight at news that he is to become an uncle again during a visit to Birkenhead.

The Earl of Wessex was in town to unveil a memorial at the Royal British Legion, remembering those who gave their lives for King and country in the First World War.

The visit took place hours after the announcement that Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were expecting their second child.

Asked for his view on the impending birth, with a joyful laugh Prince Edward said: "Of course I'm delighted, who wouldn't be?"

The area fell silent as the monument was unveiled in front of more than 100 invited guests.

Prince Edward chatted with members of the British Legion and youngsters from local schools.

He was presented with a posy of flowers from Megan Hughes, aged 11, from Prenton High School.

The memorial was designed by councillor Jim Crabtree after a meeting with Birkenhead Lions Club at the British Legion’s branch in Park Road.

Jim, who represents Birkenhead North, said: "It's been 100 years coming, but finally there is a tribute here at the legion.

“I'm very pleased that Prince Edward took time to come and unveil it.

"I was delighted when the legion asked if we could make something to commemorate the war.

"The finished result is a lasting tribute to the sacrifices made by so many people from Birkenhead.”

Chairwoman of British Legion Birkenhead branch Tanya Cawood said: "The memorial is a magnificent statue.

"Jim and I have known each other for a many years, when he mentioned the idea of creating a statue, I never thought it would happen.

"The unveiling today means such a lot to the legion."

The statue was constructed by Sullivan Engineering in Wallasey.
