A BIRKENHEAD man has been arrested after the owners of a Wirral convenience store were threatened at knifepoint.

Merseyside Police arrested the 38-year-old Wednesday in connection with the robbery at R Late Stores in Bebington on Sunday night.

At around 7.30pm, a man walked into the store on Old Chester Road armed with a kitchen knife.

He threatened the male and female shop keepers and demanded they hand over money from the till.

When the couple refused, the raider forced open the till himself and stole a quantity of cash before fleeing on foot in the direction of Highfield South. The two victims were distressed but unhurt.

The police were called and patrols, included an officer with a dog, searched the area but the offender could not be found.

Following today’s arrest, police say they are questioning the suspect in connection with the robbery, as well as an aggravated burglary at Victoria Kebab House on Bebington Road, Birkenhead on August 20 and a burglary at a restaurant on Borough Road, Wallasey in the early hours of August 21.

Enquiries into all three incidents are ongoing.

Anyone with information should call Wirral CID on 0151 777 2265 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
