WIRRAL'S Race For Life in aid of Cancer Research UK takes place in Birkenhead Park later this morning.

More than 2,600 women will take part in the Globe-backed fundraiser, which starts at 11am. It raises much-needed funds to help the charity's life-saving work.

Jennifer Ward, northwest event manager for Cancer Research UK, said last week: "I want to say a big thanks to everyone who has signed up to take part in this year’s event. It means a lot to us and will help to fund the vital research.

"By raising money through Race for Life, people in the North West are helping Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists make advances in research which will help more men, women and children survive."

Among those taking part in this year's event is Debbie Layfield, who works for Tesco in Bidston Moss.

The store's community champion, Debbie has been clear of cancer for five years and has organised a big group featuring colleagues to take part part in the run.

Also taking part is Joanne McCann, whose dad William died from pancreatic cancer. She said: "It's going to be an incredibly emotional event, but I know dad would be proud of me and that by taking part I’ll be helping other families have more precious time with their loved ones.

"That's why I want women in the area to join me, because united we are stronger than this terrible disease."

The Globe has been Race For Life’s official newspaper since 2006.
