We have just received a statement from United Utilities regarding water problems in Birkenhead and Prenton yesterday.

Nine fire hydrants were damaged by vandals, resulting in no water or low pressure for customers from around 3.30pm on Thursday.

The water provider received around 50 calls from customers but they suspect the numbers affected probably ran into hundreds.

WIRRAL chief executive Graham Burgess has defended the decision to send three councillors and two officers, including himself, to a conference in Bournemouth at a cost of £5,000.

The cash-strapped council was slammed yesterday for its spending habits, but Mr Burgess insisted the conference allowed them to "showcase Wirral’s achievements and good practice" on a national platform.

Following yesterday's industrial action, a spokesman for the fire service said: "Non-striking firefighters attended a total of 26 incidents during the nine-hour period of industrial action today, July 10.

"The call-outs included two road traffic collisions, one call where firefighters gave first aid to a member of the public who had collapsed, three property fires, two vehicle fires and 13 secondary fires." Read more here.

WE'VE had lots of reaction overnight on the news that Wirral benmen could go on strike next Friday - the second day of the Open Championship.

A spokesman for Wirral Council said this morning that bins close to the course will be emptied tomorrow, Saturday, and any potential strike will not leave "overflowing" bins. Read more here.
