FROM personal participation, the 2014 Wirral Walking Festival continues to exceed expectations, not least when we went to find the 'Bats in Brotherton Park', Bromborough.

A good crowd gathered in Dibbinsdale Local Nature Reserve visitor centre, despite there having been a dreadful bouncing rain downpour less than an hour earlier.

Wirral ranger Alan Small excellently and informatively led the group, supplying us with bat detectors and torches so we did not miss out on any of the ecological fun.

We heard lots of bats and we also saw quite a few, and Alan identified them for us.

As is his wont, Alan organised everything down to the last detail and had us all round the entrance to Otters’ Tunnel at dusk, as we were hoping for a grand emergence of our flying mammalian cousins in search of insect takeaways to keep them ticking over gourmet-style through the night.

However, despite us all behaving impeccably, the grand emergence didn't happen.

I turned to my companion, Andrew, and said "There must be something good on Bat TV tonight to be keeping them all inside."

He immediately replied: "Yes there is - Batman & Robin"!
