Rovers caretaker manager hoping for repeat performance against Stevenage
Updated 2:10pm Friday 7th March 2014 in News
JOHN McMahon wants Tranmere Rovers to match last season's performance at Stevenage when they travel to the Lamex Stadium on Saturday.
The assistant manager says it won't be easy against a Stevenage side who, like Tranmere, are unbeaten in three matches.
Rovers travel to the Lamex Stadium in 19th place in League One with 36 points from 33 games. A win could lift the visitors as high as 15th. On the road this season Rovers have won five, drawn three and lost eight.
Stevenage go into the match four places and four points below Tranmere. At home this season they have won five, drawn two and lost eight.
Only a late equaliser denied Rovers all three points against Stevenage in last season, with Jake Cassidy heading the squad into the lead.
Assessing this weekend's opponents, in a post-match interview, McMahon said: "They've got a never say die attitude. They're competitive and hardworking.
"They're direct - a lot of goals are scored from set plays, long throw ins and free kicks so we need to be switched on when we get in those positions.
"But they can also play a bit when they get in the final third and [Luke] Freeman is a good, good player.
"There are bits of their game we have analysed and we'll look to work on.
"We were terrific down there last season and played some really good football but conceded a 93rd minute goal to level the game."
McMahon has added Junior Brown to his squad ahead of the trip to Stevenage. The Fleetwood loanee could feature in any one of a number of positions.
Abdulai Baggie is unavailable due to a knee ligament injury but McMahon has an otherwise fully fit squad to select from.
At home this season Stevenage have won five, drawn two and lost eight. Boro boss Graham Westley could be without Filipe Morais but has no new injury concerns ahead of the game.
His squad includes former Rovers winger Lucas Akins who has scored four times in 25 appearances this season.
