The RSPCA is appealing for information to find a woman who was caught on CCTV apparently  abandoning a dying cat in a Birkenhead street.

The incident happened on the morning of Friday, July 12, outside a garage at Oak Tree Place.

The charity says the woman was seen pulling up to the garage before opening the door of her Ford Fiesta and placing a cat-carrier on the floor.

The incident was reported to the RSPCA and an officer was sent to pick up the cat, which was extremely ill, in a collapsed state, and had to be put down.

The black female cat was thought to be around 12 years old and was taken to a nearby vet for emergency treatment.

But vets advised the animal needed to be put to sleep as nothing more could be done - the cat was extremely dehydrated and suffering kidney problems.

RSPCA inspector Anthony Joynes is investigating the incident and said: “The CCTV footage clearly shows this woman dumping a cat-carrier.

“When the carrier was picked up it had the extremely sick cat inside.

"Firstly, I cannot understand why someone would just dump a sick animal like this and secondly, she did not even attempt to leave it outside a vet’s surgery or even an RSPCA centre.

“It really does upset us when we have to deal with these incidents which involve such a blatant disregard for an animal’s wellbeing and our RSPCA centres are already full to bursting with unwanted cats and kittens."
