Recently, I visited the wonderfully quaint town of Caernarfon, and it was truly stunning. The main town is situated around the grounds of the castle, built by Edward I in 1285, it is architecturally one of the most breath-taking castles. During the Middle Ages it was used as a jail and ultimately fell into ruination, however in the 19th century public funds were used to restore it back to glory. Its two mighty gatehouses and polygonal towers make it equally individual and beautiful. Regardless of its appearance it really is a must visit while the Royal Welsh Fusilier Museum and the ‘Weeping Window’ Poppy display truly ensure everyone will get something out of going to the castle.

The Anglesey Arms is located just a 15-minute drive from the town centre, highlights some of the best cuisine nearby Menai has to offer. it is firmly a family favourite. It was built in 1822 and is the only building that is still attached to the Walled town on the outside, as many were ordered to be demolished in the early 20th century. It is a lovely place to enjoy a drink, a hearty meal or a good night’s sleep. They offer quintessentially British pub grub that will satisfy any appetite.

If you are more inclined to explore the outdoors there are numerous adventurous to be had in North Wales. Newborough beach is a picturesque beach, hosting sandy coves and long stretches of undisturbed views towards Snowdonia. Whilst there are no shops it provides a great opportunity to take advantage of a picnic lunch with the family. If you’re looking for a bit more movement in your holidays there are numerous mountain and lake walks to enjoy. One of the most notable is the Cwm Idwal Walk, a moderate circular walk. Cvm Idwal is truly a natural wonder, the mountains carved deeply into a bowl shape with a gorgeous lake situated at the bottom. It has a well laid out path up and around the lake, but for the more adventurous of you a walk up the Glyder mountains begins there.

So, if you or a friend are looking for a ‘staycation’ getaway anytime soon or in the future I urge you to have a look at Caernarfon. It truly has everything to offer for every type of person from the more laid back to the adventurous.
