I wonder if any of your older readers can confirm this for me?
When St Luke’s Church at the corner of Mill Lane and Breck Road in Wallasey was restored after war damage the new spire is, so I understand, made of fibre glass.
Apparently, the Vicar had served in the RAF during World War Two and used his connections.
The Weathercock was put into place using a helicopter.
This would be circa 1950.
My Grandmother lived in Breck Road close to the church and I remember her telling me that she had stood in her garden and watched.
Independently, many years later, my sister-in-law told me that my mother-in-law had walked up from Poulton to watch the event.
Also, a friend thinks that he has seen a photograph.
Can any reader confirm the date or provide a photo of the event.
When Coventry Cathedral was completed in 1960, the cross on the roof was put in place by a helicopter and, it is claimed that this was the first time that such an event had taken place anywhere in the world.
It appears that Wallasey preceded Coventry by nearly ten years.
