CAN anyone explain to me the logic of always moving to the left lane as soon as possible after a motorway overtake?

The police say changing lanes is one of the 'riskiest manoeuvres' on a motorway, yet will prosecute someone for not changing lane!

If the inside lane is full of slowmoving trucks, as it usually is, it would appear the police would prefer we dodged in and out of the inside lane like a fiddler’s elbow rather than stay in an outer lane (assuming speed matched to the other traffic in the lane).

I agree having someone driving slowly in the middle lane is a hazard.

But, surely, having loads of cars constantly diving in and out of the inside lane is worse.

Yes, we have all experienced lane hogs, but over 53 years on the roads I have witnessed many near misses, due to the obsessive 'left laners' who pass a truck, dive right back into the inside and then out again almost immediately because they obviously could not see the next slow-moving vehicle just a few hundred yards up the road.

What am I missing?
