HAVING read Granty's Stan Boardman anecdotes of Gordon Banks in the February 20 edition of Wirral Globe, I'd like to add my memories of when Gordon came to Tranmere in February, 1972.

It was the fourth round of the FA Cup and Tranmere played Stoke City in the old First Division at the time.

Gordon Banks was in goal for Stoke in a 2-2 draw.

A record crowd for Tranmere of 24,000 attended.

Tranmere's tickets had gone on sale the previous Sunday and from early morning the queue seemed endless.

The main factor for the big attendance was the presence of Gordon Banks, the England goalkeeper and World Cup winner from 1966!

Everyone had come to see him.

The ground - all standing apart from the main stand in those days - was packed out.

In fact, it was a day of amazing attendances on Merseyside as this game was played on the same day, at the same time as cup ties at Anfield - Liverpool versus Leeds (attendance 56,000) and Goodison - Everton versus Walsall (45,000).
