I WRITE in response to Andy Corkhill's letter (Pay more for less) published in the Globe on February 6, 2019.

The Government has given Police Commissioners little choice other than to raise the police precept collected by local authorities to protect the police budget.

The public have indicated that they are willing to pay more and, in return, the Chief Constable and I have agreed that, over the next year, 100 police vacancies which would have been lost will be filled, 40 new police constable posts will be created and a further 80 police posts will be formed by spending a reserve, held in case of redundancies which will not now be needed.

As a result of agreeing to this increase, there will be about 220 police posts at the end of March 2020 than otherwise would be the case.

Andy Corkhill has got it wrong.

Jane Kennedy, Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside
