COUNCILLOR Burgess Joyce seems to be somewhat confused on his geographical points.

The Mersey side of the peninsula is east.

It is here that Labour has held Birkenhead since taking the seat from the Liberal Democrats.

Wirral West in the early 1950s was represented by Selwyn Lloyd, Wallasey by Ernest Marples and Bebington (which included the Woodchurch estate) by Hendrie Oakshott.

Things changed in the 1964 general election when Bebington went to Labour.

Gradually things in Wirral changed, the biggest change when Edward Heath's Government introduced new boundaries and constituencies.

We became the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral within the county on Merseyside in 1974.

Immediately things changed.

We were now considered part of Liverpool - this was following the adoption in 1969 of postcodes.

What can one say other than we in Wirral have suffered under the control of our transport; Mersey Tunnel charges; insurance and many things too numerous to mention since 1974.

Gone is civic pride; local councils no longer trying with each-other to see who can best spend "the rates."

Local identity has been eradicated - we now live in a mismanaged conglomeration where OUR council tax is spent elsewhere.

Wirral is not the desirable place it once was to its residents.

Can I ask: Do you vote Labour because you live in a 'dump' - or do you live in a 'dump' because you vote Labour?
