MEMBERS of Wirral & Chester Taekwondo clubs are celebrating returning from a national championship with 33 medals.

More than 1,500 competitors took part in the event held at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.

The championship saw competitors come from England Ireland, Scotland, Wales, as well as national teams from Poland and Holland to give the championship an international flavor.

From the 33 medals that came home to Wirral & Chester Taekwondo club, 15 were gold, nine were silver and nine bronze.

As well as returning with medals young members Lily Jones, aged 9, and Lewis Cairns, 10, were also selected to represent the England National Team in the junior home international.

Lewis winning bronze with the boy's team event and Lily winning gold with the girl’s team event to add to her two other British titles she won earlier in the day.

Chief instructor Richard Saunders, a 6th degree master "This was a fantastic achievement for Wirral & Chester Taekwondo after a long year of competition.

"It is also great preparation for the next years World Championships that will be taking place in the same venue.

"To have two of our own students selected for the national team is the icing on the cake and makes me feel very proud".
