It was not much fun for the cricketers last Saturday with some matches not starting and others affected by the wet weather.

Many players, however, braved it out to get action and there were some interesting results.

Neston and Oxton posted important victories in the Premier Division of the Cheshire County League but still occupy the bottom two places in the table.

Neston had 38 runs to spare at home to Grappenhall. David Hurst top scored with 48 and Paul Stimson finished with 5-24.

Oxton saw off Bowdon by 60 runs. Chris Cashin made 52 and the bowlers to shine on a damp, dull day were Gayan Fernando with 5-38 and Glen Queri 4-25.

There was no joy for Irby and Upton in Division Two as both suffered defeat, Irby by five wickets at home to Alvanley and Upton by 92 runs against visiting Stockport.

Birkenhead Park lost and Wallasey and New Brighton had to settle for drawn matches in the Premier Division of the Liverpool Competition.

Neil Cross helped Wallasey to a 224-7 declared total at Bootle who closed 92 runs behind with one wicket intact. Chris Bourne bowled well to return 7-33.

Luke Proctor scored 60 for New Brighton who reached 163 after being asked to bat first, visitors Rainhill were 159-7 at stumps.

Birkenhead Park were out in at Ormskirk and their 107 total proved inadequate as the Lancashire outfit got home by three wickets.

Birkenhead St Mary's went under by eight wickets against St Helens Town. Muhammad Ghafoor did his best with 44.

Parkfield Liscard and Caldy did not start their matches.

Tranmere Vics in Division Two of the Cheshire Alliance made short work of visiting Bowdon Vale who were shot out for a meagre 62. Vics cruised in by nine wickets.
