THE Winter Bowls Flyers restarted in Birkenhead Park on Sunday in typical winter weather, sunny but very cold.

When Tixall's Jamie Fitzpatrick got through to the final it looked odds on that he would resume where he left off in 2017 and take the first prize yet again.

But, in one of those upsets that make all sports so interesting, his opponent in the final, Cammell Laird's Peter McGhee, came through with some brilliant play to deservedly take his first ever win in these tournaments.

McGhee had earlier fought back from a big deficit to beat New Brighton Quarry Viking's Eddie Dutton in his quarter final match before he proved to be too good for young Finley Hormbrey of Ledsham Royal in the semi final.

Meanwhile Fitzpatrick had cruised through his quarter-final and semi-final matches against Dougie Briscoe and John Hignett Snr to reach the final.

In the final McGhee coped with the conditions better than Fitzpatrick and it was great to see another name added to the list of winners.

It was also great to see one of the youngest players at the Flyers, 13 year old Finley Hormbrey, getting through to the semi final stage.

Semi Finals: Fitzpatrick 21, Hignett 14; McGhee 21, Hormbrey 11.
