LAST weekend saw the first two single's competitions of the 2017 summer season.

On Saturday the eight players who had won through the qualifying rounds of the Wirral and district's charity tournament played out the final stages on Albany's green.

After a great afternoon's bowls the winner was one of the Wirral's younger players, Jordan Mcdermott, who came through to to take the first prize beating a previous winner, Mick Andrews in the final.

Tixall's McDermott played really well all afternoon and had already beaten another previous winner, Nick Burridge in the semi finals.

Andrews only just got through his semi final match against Jamie Smith, 21-20. 

But in the final but he could not prevent young Jordan from joining his father, Dave, as a winner of this tournament.

Quarter finals: M. Andrews 21, G. Dewhurst 13; J. Smith 21, R. Ollerhead 15; N. Burridge Jnr 21, K. Wharton 12; J. McDermott 21, T. Cavanagh 14.

Semi finals: Andrews 21, Smith 20; Mcdermott 21, Burridge 11. Final: Mcdermott 21, Amdrews 17.

The Wallasey Association's Federation Merit tournament was played in Central Park on Sunday.

New Brighton Queens Royal's Mathew Gilmore dominated all his matches and he took the top prize beating Les Henderson in the final.

John Harrison had done very well in the recent Winter Flyers Tounaments but he could not match Gilmore and was well beaten in the quarter finals and then in the semi final Gilmore proved to be too good for his old rival Anthony Thompson.

Henderson had a comfortable win over St George's Vic Williams in the quarter final and then he beat Dave Hollywood in his semi final match.

The final was a close but Henderson could not prevent Gilmore from winning this event for the sixth time.
