A “RECORD NUMBER” of young Wirral athletes have been presented with bursary awards.
Lady Mayor of Wirral, Cherry Povall, presented bursary awards of £3,500 in total to local junior sports people on Tuesday (June 18) at Birkenhead Town Hall.
The bursaries, funding by money raised by the Wirral Sports Forum, provide financial help to young sports people across the borough to achieve their sporting goals.
This year a record number of 19 young athletes successfully applied for bursaries. The eight sports represented include athletics, golf, swimming, gymnastics, modern pentathlon, majorettes, rugby and archery.
Wirral Sports Forum Chair Ronan Kearney said: “We wish all of them success in their individual and team events and look forward to hearing from them on how they all got on.
“The bursary awards are an exclusive benefit for our forum members. I would encourage all local sports clubs, leagues or associations to join the Wirral Sports Forum.
“Our fund raising primarily comes from the annual Wirral Sports Awards. This year’s event takes place on 22nd October 2024 at the Floral Pavilion and is celebrating its 60th anniversary.
“It’s Wirral’s largest multi sports awards ceremony so no local sports club, league or organisation would want to miss out. We will soon be receiving nominations under the different categories.”
