AFTER a one week rain delay, the Love Lane Liverpool Competition began in earnest with on Saturday with Wallasey opening with a Premier League home win against Leigh.
Put into bat, Leigh struggled to contain left-arm spinner Sumit Ruikar who took 4-53 off his 21.3 overs as the visitors were dismissed for 131. It wasn't plain sailing in Wallasey's reply but an unbeaten 33 from Ruikar and 26 from Neil Cross helped seal a four wicket win.
Birkenhead Park travelled to Southport and Birkdale where an opening stand of 92 immediately had the visitors on the back foot. David Nevin picked up 3-33 but the host's total of 194-6 off 60 overs looked an imposing one and so it proved with Park bowled out for 148 in reply. Mark Rowland top scored with 53.
All other games involving Wirral sides were postponed.
On Sunday, Wallasey were involved in the ECB National Knockout with a home tie against Clifton of the Greater Manchester League. The visitors made 185-4 off their 40 overs with Wallasey just coming up short after closing on 183-6.
