Due to the unfortunate weather circumstances many games have been postponed in all competitions. Thankfully some clubs have the use or hire of all weather pitches and private grounds that have helped to ease the fixture backlog, those clubs must be thanked especially as Tuesday, January 23 marks the exact date of the birth of The Houlihan’s Birkenhead Association Football League in 1964. 60 years ago our predecessors would be very proud of the current committee continuing on from all their hard work and time put, there were many hours of committee meeting lasting un some occasions three hours and more in particular the 1960s and 1970s.

The five league games that were able to take place produced an abundance of goals 35 in total. There was a ten goal thriller on the solar campus all weather pitch in Leasowe between hosts Cheshire Cheese and Neston Nomads. Luke Blondel notched a fine hat-trick completing it in the 90th minute to take a 5-4 lead for Neston Nomads who then conceded a last gasp equaliser from Kieran Frost to share the spoils. Joe Foster and Jamie Gardiner were also on the mark for Neston while Lewis Gouldson, Lorcan Rogan, Anthony Evans and Ewan McCready also found the scoresheet for the Cheese in a fine example for Premier Division football.

Great Float S&S anchored themselves in pole position after inflicting a 3-1 defeat on the highly fancied Queens Park with a brace from Shaun Parrington and a Peter Morgan effort.

Action from Maxwell’s Barber Division One saw a splendid 3-3 draw between Prenton FC and Bushell Athletic. Dean Wylde, Leo Jones and Tom Fenley netted for Prenton FC while Leon Jones hit a tremendous treble for Bushell Athletic. Bushell’s do have a few games in hand on some clubs and are expected to climb the table after only losing one league game all season,

Lions FC continue to dominate in the Martin Gallier Project Division Two and are the only club in all the four divisions with a 100% record. Their latest was a 7-2 win over Woodchurch Rovers  who scored through Haydn Berry, David Harrison, while respective goal getters for Lions FC were Ameel Al Gamri, Mark Head (2), Paul Ryan (3) and Kyle Wright.

Feeneys FC kept up the pressure on the leading clubs in Division Three and are hopeful of promotion in their debut season after taking the honours 4-1 over a strong Wirral Athletic.
