TRANMERE are bottom of Group D in the Football League Trophy after a 1-0 midweek defeat to Leicester City u21at Prenton Park.

Rovers dominated the tie for long periods but could not find an equaliser after Silko Thomas put the Foxes ahead in the ninth minute with a close-range finish.

Tranmere's Joe Yarney hit the post with a long range strike mid-way through the first half beofe Rob Apter twice went close for the hosts.

Rovers were cursing their luck again seven minutes into the second half when Sam Taylor hit the woodwork with a curling effort with skipper Brad Walker also seeing his shot rebound off a post late on.

"We are disappointed because I wanted us to win the game," said Tranmere's interim manager Nigel Adkins.

"We gave a shocking goal away to start off which gave them something to hold on and if you look at it they've camped in for the whole evening and got everyone behind the ball so it was up to us to break them down.

"We've hit the woodwork three times and their goalkeeper had an inspired game and sometimes you think you've not had the rub of the green.

"But there was some good play, some situations that we've created and the bright spark was Apter who got the ball in one on situations out wide and got to drift in behind their defenders and he was exciting to watch.

"We also had players coming back from injury but on another day we might have won by five or six and we haven't done and that's the reality of it."
