IT was a weekend of mixed emotions for Cammell Laird 1907 after they were knocked out of the FA Vase before executing a stirring comeback on Monday in the league.

On Saturday, Lairds entertained Burscough from the North West Counties Premier Division in the Isuzu FA Vase first qualifying round.

James Eaton hit the bar early on for the hosts from a free-kick but Burscough took the lead four minutes before the break when Tom Lawless scored.

The hosts were level just after half-time through Ben Summers but further chances were not converted and the cup tie went to a penalty shoot-out with Lairds missing three of their four spot-kicks to allow the visitors to progress with a 3-1 result.

Monday saw Lairds welcome table-topping Market Drayton Town to the KRCT Ltd Stadium.

Town opened the scoring in the fifth minute as slack marking allowed Jacob Welch to put the visitors ahead.

The Lairds midfield of captain Ryan Smith, James Eaton and Mike Speed applied pressure on Town’s backline, but neither side took the created chances and the visitors went into the break with a 1-0 lead.

Second half action saw Lairds pressing for an equaliser but this did not come until the 74th minute when Mike Speed scored at the back post with a fine header.

With Dom Hoppe, Jimmy Ludbrook and Ben Graham providing a solid defence, Lairds continued to press for another goal which came in the 82nd minute thanks to Richard Ley netting another headed effort to give the hosts the lead.

Six minutes later Hoppe made it 3-1 with a close finish, before Jay Harvey completed the excellent comeback by lofting a great goal over the head of the advancing keeper to the joy of the home crowd.

Lairds are next in action when they take on second placed Stockport Town on Saturday, September 2 at home with a 3pm kick-off.
