HUNDREDS of volunteers have started training to help make this year’s Open the best Wirral has ever held.

The Championship takes place from July 16-23 and Wirral Council, in collaboration with the organiser of The Open, R&A, asked for people to become involved.

Many have come forward to join the 151st Open Golf Championship Ambassadors Programme during the Championship up and the first training sessions have taken place.

But there is still time to get involved and be a local, off course ambassador and two more training sessions will be taking place in the coming weeks.

During the Championship there will be multiple six-hour volunteer shifts available throughout the week ranging between 6.30am and 9pm as the start and finish times vary throughout the days of The Open.

The leader of Wirral Council, councillor Paul Stuart, said: "First of all I'd like to thank all those who have come forward to help us in delivering The 151st Open – this is a massive event for Wirral and the borough will be in the world spotlight, and with your help we aim to make this the best we have ever hosted.

"Tens of thousands of visitors will be attending every day of the Championship and having local people with their local knowledge to help them make the most of their visit to our borough will help them feel more comfortable and ensure things run as smoothly as possible.

"And if you haven’t volunteered yet but are thinkng about it please do get involved – there is still time."

People can sign up to volunteer up until the last training sessions on Thursday, June 29 at 6pm and Saturday, July 1 at 10am.
