MEMBERS of a Wirral martial arts club showcased their skills during a special celebration of Japanese culture.

The group from Thingwall-based Tengoku Tsuchi Dojo was invited to display the martial art of Iaido as part of Discover Japan day at Liverpool’s World Museum.

The event was delivered by the Japan Society North West.

The Tengoku Tsuchi Dojo teaches iaido, a Japanese martial art that emphasises being aware and capable of quickly drawing a sword and responding to sudden attacks. Beginners start by learning with a wooden sword, or 'bokken'.

At the event, members performed various set displays, known as Kata, using wooden swords before one of the club’s instructors, Mark Fletcher, performed the same demonstration with a steel sword.

Founded by Mark Fletcher and fellow sensei John Bogin, the club is based at Thingwall Recreation Centre.

Last year it became the first on the peninsula to be recognised by the British Kendo Association (BKA).

John says: “Iaido is one of the lesser-known martial arts so we were proud to be able to take this opportunity to share this discipline with our audience at the Discover Japan event.

Thingwall Tengoku Tsuchi Dojo is currently welcoming new members, particularly those with previous martial arts experience.

The club trains at Thingwall Recreation Centre on Sparks Lane in Thingwall from 7.30pm to 9pm each Friday. For more information contact John Bogin on 07787 975 788 or email johnbogin@gmail.com.
