TRANMERE striker Harvey Saunders credited Rovers’ new style for helping him score his first goal for Rovers in the 1-1 draw at Colchester.

Tranmere took a 13th-minute lead through Saunders, who pounced on Josh Hawkes’ through ball and went past goalkeeper Kieran O’Hara before tapping it into the vacant net.

And Saunders, who joined Rovers in January from Bristol Rovers, was pleased to finally get off the mark for his new side.

He said: “We’re all disappointed we didn’t get the three points because that’s what we came here to do but I’m over the moon to finally get off the mark.

“We’ve had a change in shape and I’ve enjoyed it. You have a number 10 in there to help you out a bit more and if the ball comes up to you they’re for you straight away and you get further up the pitch faster. It was a fast turn around but I think the lads took to it really well.

“Everyone has been trying their best to get me on the scoresheet and they’ve all stuck with me. They could’ve easily written me off but everyone at the club has been positive and kept me going.”

Saunders, 25, said that the Rovers squad had responded well after a traumatic week following the sacking of Micky Mellon.

“It’s part of the game and can happen to anyone but it’s never nice when someone loses their job,” he added. “The lads are great here - there’s no cliques or divides and we’re all very solid. Hopefully you saw that on the pitch today.”
