TRANMERE Rovers have confirmed that first team manager Micky Mellon has been sacked.

The Whites currently sit 14th in League Two having lost 3-1 to Newport County at Prenton Park yesterday.

Rovers are 11 points off the play off positions and have scored just 36 goals in 37 games this season.

In a statement released at 3pm on Sunday afternoon, Rovers chairman, Mark Palios, said: “From both a personal and a club perspective this hasn’t been an easy decision.

"Micky has a special place in the hearts of Tranmere fans thanks to the back to back promotions in 2018 and 2019.

"Since he returned to the club in 2021 after a year in Scotland, we haven’t managed to achieve the success we both wanted and I reluctantly came to the conclusion that a change was needed as we start recruitment preparations for next season.

"I would like to thank Micky for his contribution and efforts in both managerial stints at the club.”

Rovers confirmed that Ian Dawes will step in as caretaker manager assisted by Andy Parkinson whilst options are considered in preparation for the new season.

Following the defeat to Newport, Mellon had said he believed he still had the backing of the majority of Rovers supporters.

Some home fans made their feelings clear on the final whistle as boos and calls for Mellon’s head greeted Tranmere’s second successive defeat.

Mellon said: “I understand all the disappointment in the ground but I think generally the supporters were fine.

“I think there’s a majority of the supporters who get what we’re trying to do at the minute and they see that which I thank them for because they could have turned and made things difficult for us.

“It’s been a hard watch for them, too."
